“...this is the first time in all the years that English is the official language of the tour” (Gerry)

The weekend before our tour brought large amounts of rain and flooding to eastern Bavaria, Upper and Lower Austria and the Czech Republic. With an anxious look at the daily weather forecast for the weekend, the mood improved from day to day. In the end, it was clear that we would have two almost cloudless, mild, sunny days. Once again, it turned out that 9 out of 10 Oktoberfest opening weekends have great weather. This year was no exception.

Am Start in LA

At the start in Landshut

We set off on time at 7:30 towards Landshut. On the highway we met Christian, Gisela, Hici and Tom in the Jaguar MKII. They were all on their way to the “Gieserwiese”. As soon as we arrived, Roland, Thomas, Andy and Lisa also arrived with their Z3. A few greetings and photos, then we finally set off on the tour. It was slowly getting warmer, and the convertible drivers took off their thick jackets. We headed east via the Vils valley. Unfortunately, the FJS bridge in Passau was closed, so we got a little lost for the first and last time. The granite center presented itself in the blazing sunshine.

We enjoyed the guided tour and the films, most of which were in English. The shady beer garden of the “Stemplinger Hansl” awaited us. The lunch break was a little longer than planned, but nobody minded. We made our way to the ferry at the Vltava reservoir via lovely little roads, some of which were downright romantic. Due to the number of vehicles, there were two trips on the ferry.

The Hotel Relax is located right next to the landing stage. The rooms are flooded with sunlight and very well maintained. Some enjoyed the wellness area and others enjoyed an Aperol Spritz in the evening sun. At 19:00 on the dot, we sat at a long table for dinner. It was the first time that I gave my obligatory speech exclusively in English. Which Gerry commented on positively. Later, we ended the day at the bar.

Gerry from Maryland (USA) and Thure and Kathy from Mikkeli (Finland) arrived on Friday. Gerhard and Julian from Lüneburg Heath also made it to the dinner at the Hotel Hofmeier in Hetzenhausen. We were delighted to see each other again, as Gerry had been here for the last time before the pandemic. The next morning was still quite chilly, but the sun was shining promisingly. Then the distribution of the vehicles began. Basti and his sister Karo were given a brief introduction to the MGB. Gerry had the “Goldie”, which he already knew from previous years. Gerhard and Julian felt right at home in the W126. Christopher and Mirelle got the Pagode and Kathy with Thure the “G”. Karime and Benoit from Paris had the “bomb” (W108, 3.5). That left only the “6.3” for Sonny and me.

Jaguar MKII

As expected, the lake was covered in fog in the morning. With a good breakfast in our stomachs, we left the hotel at around 9:30. Just a few kilometers from the hotel, the fog lifted, and the sun shone from the sky. We continued along the water through a magical, lightly colored early autumn landscape towards Phillipsreut. Just before the border there was Super 98 for 1.38 euros! In Lalling, Mr. Streicher was waiting for us in front of the museum.

Lalling

Art and Auto Museum Lalling

We were surprised when he told us that the glass artworks in the display case on the wall were worth more than all the other exhibits put together. The replica of the Roman imperial cup alone astonished us with its value of over one million euros. The black “6.3” in the museum was for sale, but it was a “dazzler”.

In bright sunshine, we went to the beer garden in Mariakirchen. Here we had our only mishap: the right front tire of the Jaguar was flat. But if you know Christian, you know he has everything with him, and so it was. With combined forces, the tire was quickly changed, and we were able to start the journey home. Cleaning up the cars was a solvable logistical problem after everyone had filled up in Freising. Michael visited us for the final dinner in Hetzenhausen. The next morning Gerry took Thure and Kathy to the airport and so the last participants were on their way home. They all confirmed that they would like to come again in 2025! What a great idea!

Save the date October 20 and 21 2025 !!
